David Rousseau, a crime novelist suffering from writer's block, returns to Mouthe, a village in the Jura mountains where he spent part of his childhood, reputed to be the coldest in France. A monk, Brother Giacomo, promised to reveal a secret about his mother. Upon his arrival, David learns that the monk is dead, while strange events begin to disturb the village's icy routine: the discovery of a human ear, then that of a corpse mimicking a Van Gogh self-portrait. To the despair of the local gendarme, Sergeant Louvetot, David inserts himself into the investigation, concocting theories worthy of his novels. Could a serial killer be hiding… in Mouthe?

Troubled by the clues he's gathered about his origins, David is determined to stay in Mouthe. Especially since a new crime scene replicating a famous painting has been discovered… But Sergeant Louvetot, deaf to his hunches, orders him to stop interfering with the investigation. David finds a better ally in Nicki, the singer at the bar Les Flocons, who is immediately charmed by his whimsical nature. Their suspicions fall on the village librarian, a young man with obsessive tendencies and a passion for art history. The killer strikes again.
