The long Long Holiday

War breaks out in France in 1940. Papilou, the rest of the family, and Jean-Baptiste, the postman, join the long lines of refugees heading south. The brothers are left without their grandparents after an accident separates them, and the postman is responsible for the children. Returning to the village, they meet friend Jean and his mother on the way. When the occupation arrives in the village, Colonel Von Krieger and his troops once again disturb the lives of Ernest and Colette, who split for a time due to conflicts in the Morteau house where they are staying. Papilou and Mamili return to the village and meet with their grandchildren, full of joy.

In 1941, the first winter under German occupation brought food shortages and rationing. The brothers receive a letter from their father: he is alive but a prisoner in Germany. Hans, the German requisition officer, uses his position to force the food without permission or official documents. The Robinsons decide to follow him and find that he has a scheme with Tissier, the owner of the grocery store. At night an English plane is shot down and crashes into the sea. The Germans are looking for the man who was seen parachuting. The next day, the Robinsons discover the injured pilot in his hiding place and decide to take care of the Englishman.

In 1942, all Jews are required to wear a yellow star. The atmosphere is ominous in Grangeville: resistance is growing in strength, but has been harshly repressed by the Germans. The Robinsons plan to flee to join the resistance in London. The night of the great departure comes, but the Allies land at Dieppe. It's Operation Jubilee. The fighting, the shooting and the explosions scare the children who decide to stay. Robert reappears for the happiness of his children. The following year, acts of resistance are more frequent, but a new wave of German soldiers arrives in the city. And among them is Hans, who now wants revenge.

The winds of freedom begin to blow in France. The Allies arrive, but progress is slow. The resistance explodes a large reserve of German ammunition. In retaliation, the Germans take the villagers hostage. All the children hide in the grave and discover that Pierre has brought with him a troop of resistance fighters, including Herpin, who is seriously injured. The night of August 31, 1944 is long. Bombs, shots and injuries to all sides of the village. After many clashes, the region is liberated. Our heroes meet their mother, Lucie. The whole family is finally together. Colette and Ernest's big big vacations are over.

In 1939 Ernest and Colette leave Paris with their parents, Robert and Lucie, to visit Papilou and Mamili, their maternal grandparents in the fictional Grangeville, Normandy. These are complicated times: Hitler had invaded Poland and Austria. Far from the concerns of adults, children make the most of the countryside. When the war is declared, Robert goes to the front and Lucie is interned in a sanatorium to rest. Grandparents need to take care of their grandchildren longer than planned, and children need to adapt to the new school and new friends (and enemies).
