Field Trip

We stopped by ABC News Channel 10, where Steve Caporizzo was taping his show “Pet Connection.” We learned about how he got involved with animals and how Pet Connection started. Then we made a trip to the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society. There we had a chance to play with the cute cats and dogs looking for forever homes and learn how the volunteers keep everything moving.

We took a ride out to Wagner Farms in Poestenkill, New York. We got a chance to talk to Farmer Keith Wagner and get a hands-on look at the animals and the dairy process. We also got to learn how the self-sufficient way the Wagners power their farm. Later, we took turns lending a hand on the farm and then had the opportunity to check for new additions!

We ventured outside of the capital region to see a hidden gem up north. We threw on some waders and met up with Helene Gibbens and Suzanne Weirich from Adirondack Riverwalking, who took us on a fantastic riverwalking trip. We got to learn about the practice of sensory immersion and all the health benefits that go along with it!

We followed John Hollis Allison of Hollis Home Inspection down to Livingston, NY to look at a house. Step by step we learned what a home inspector looks for on the job. We learned about some of the challenges home buyers and sellers face and how important a good inspection can be.

Have you ever wondered what goes into making some of your favorite locally-made desserts? We visited The Cookie Factory and helped make cookies, doughnuts, and chocolate-dipped strawberries. And we learned about how Chris and Joe Alberino are third-generation bakers in the city of Troy.

We visited Riverside Maple Farms and Wolf Hollow brewing to explore the new Maple Beer Trail. We stopped by the Maple farm first to learn about the maple industry and then took a hike over to Wolf Hollow. There, we sampled some beer and learned about the brewing process. Finally, we got to taste their sweet collaboration with maple cotton candy and a porter brewed with local Schenectady coffee!

We shadowed the Troy Parks and Rec crew and helped with their spring cleanup for earth day. First we stopped by Prospect Park where they were filling potholes, putting up tennis nets, and raking up the leaves. Then, we took some golf courts around Frear Park to help clean up the public golf course. We got to see firsthand what goes into getting these parks ready for spring and summer use!

We visited the Albany Distilling Company and learned about the distilling process. We got a tour of the production facility, barrel room, and even got to meet their distillery cat. Then, we walked down the road to their bottle shop and bar where we got a private lesson on making some specialty cocktails with their products!

We visited Brewtus Roasting in Delmar and learned about how coffee is roasted. We got a tour of the Coffee shop/Roastery from owner Stephen Pivonka and got to see the roasting process from start to finish. We also got to fuel up on some caffeine while we were there!
