Commissioner Juve accompanies the Marquise de Langrune by train to Paris, to to collect the money from a winning lottery ticket. During the journey, she is strangled. Young Fandor, upset by the death of his aunt, decides to help the commissioner. Juve is also investigating the assassination of an ambassador, Lord Beltham. Clues lead him to a certain Gurn, who is the lover of the widow Beltham.
