Dan, an insurance agent, is about to take his dog for its nightly walk when his wife comments bitterly upon their monotonous life of routine. Little do they realize that their dull lives are shortly to be involved with murder.

The Selincourts buy a house they discover is haunted by the scream of a woman in agony. While out one day, Mr. Selincourt hears a strange story which causes him to rush home as quick as he can.

Two gangsters, Harry Jordan and Jimmy Fraser, are on the run from the police. They decide to call on a wealthy aunt of Jimmy's whom they have never met. Jimmy never manages to see his aunt but Harry does - and a frightened Harry wishes that he never had.
