Economic decline has hit the region hard, but what remains is a sliver of hope, pride, and some of the most authentic and friendly people in the country.

Southern West Virginia to Eastern Kentucky is the largest region of economically distressed counties in the country. In many ways, it's a different America here. Deep in the heart of Appalachia is a forgotten part of America. Once the engine of the country building the nation's great cities of the 20th century, it's now an economic shell of its former self. Join me today as we go to Harlan, KY to learn from some of the multi-generational coal families about how things have changed, what the youth are doing now, and what it's like to live in this forgotten corner of America.

He grows his own food, has no government ID, his overhead is $140 a month, and he possesses a claimed happiness by being free from the system, inspired by faith.
