In 1935, Heinrich Himmler, supreme leader of the SS, established a secret project, the cornerstone of his racial policy: Lebensborn, meaning "fountain of life" in old German. At first glance, it was a network of Nazi maternity hospitals where German women, said to be "racially pure," could come and give birth in complete secrecy. They had the option of abandoning their babies, who would then be handed over to the SS and adopted by a model Nazi family. In reality, the goal of Lebensborn was to create indoctrinated children destined to rule Nazi Europe.
