Maria meets Justa, the one who tends the house and who teaches Maria how to do all the housework. Ramón scolds Manuel, knows that he has not slept with his new wife and reminds him of his obligations or else, his son will suffer. During the grape harvest, tension grows between the day laborers, Claudia, turns her protest anger against the landowner's new wife whom she intimidates by reminding her that her husband may be a murderer. María approaches the tavern where she meets Pepita, the owner's wife, and tells her about the rumors about what happened to Llanos, Manuel's first wife. María discovers a letter that Llanos wrote to her lover. She confesses that she is pregnant and that they must plan the escape. Nicolás, Manuel's son, suffers a seizure, when he wakes up, he confesses that the last time he saw his mother was when his father took her to the forest.
