The Railway: First Great Western

Just a couple of months into his new role, Paddington's duty station manager Simon Jeffery needs to deal with a major disruption as a fire has caused signal failure and all services are delayed or have been cancelled.

There are some major problems after 15,000 extra passengers descend on one little station as tempers boil over when the Glastonbury music festival disrupts the regular commute... and if that wasn't enough, there's a Royal Visit too!

The staff of First Great Western have to cope with rush hour during the summer, as commuters deal with the hot weather and a group of school kids seem determined to cause havoc.

The show takes a look at what happens after dark. The cameras follow Reene Ehrman on the Night Riviera service, which connects the capital to the far south west. Gary Brownlie, Reading's duty station manager, has to deal with lots of student merrymakers passing through the station.

Newbury Racecourse station is really busy as the public make their way to two major events at the nearby racecourse. A team is called in to look after the usually unmanned station to help keep things running smoothly.

It is the day of the Dawlish Air Show which brings an influx of passengers to the town. More staff and trains are layed on and a different queuing system is used to cope with the change.

The longest-serving driver in Europe takes his last train out. The biggest redevelopment project since Brunel's time is planned.

At Paddington a serious service disruption happens on Meet the Manager day. A fitter faces a race against the clock as he attempts to repair a faulty peak-time train full of passengers. Charlbury station is busy as the Wilderness festival takes place.
