The Queen's Lost Family

The inside story of the royal family over three turbulent decades from the 1920s to the end of the Second World War. It begins just after the First World War, as monarchies throughout Europe have toppled, and most working men and many women now have the vote.

Prince George makes a love match and marries the glamorous Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark, while Henry gives up the married Beryl Markham and also makes a suitable marriage. Edward, meanwhile, brings married American divorcee Wallis Simpson to George and Marina's pre-wedding party at Buckingham Palace, scandalising his parents. Not long after George V's Silver Jubilee celebrations, a unifying event for the nation, the King dies and Edward inherits the throne.

Britain is ripped apart by the abdication of Edward VIII and debate rages in parliament about Republicanism, while Nazi Germany continues to be of concern abroad. Edward makes a trip with Wallis Simpson to Germany and meets Hitler, but when war is declared, his hopes of a high-profile position in the war effort are dashed, and he is instead given governorship of the Bahamas. Now he truly is exiled.
