The game is here and the review embargo has lifted. This review was actually over 40 minutes in its first draft as I had just so much to say, and even the remaining 23 minutes is longer than I would have liked. Still it's a game about which much will be written over the coming months and years, so I hope this review is a worthwhile contribution to that discussion.

I can't recall ever being so captivated by a game. At least not in the last decade. I think maybe I'm going a little crazy. Regardless, I haven't been able to string a single non-Nier related thought together this week as this review has all but consumed me. Even now, I am still deeply unhappy with it as I feel it does not do the game justice. But I know I wouldn't be happy with anything I produce at this point, so my hope is that you enjoy this review more than I did, and if you hadn't thought to purchase and play Nier, that you might revisit that decision.

I got my hands on BotW on launch, but I had to shelve it as I was simply too busy to play it. I feel so fortunate that I played it when I did, as it reminded me that video games can still surprise me, and still make me feel the way I did when I was a kid playing Ocarina of Time for the first time. But Zelda isn't perfect, and hopefully I can share my thoughts about its imperfections without everyone going nuts. Here's hoping :P

Games that launch badly might improve, but their review scores will stand as a permanent monument to their initial failings. Destiny's disappointing launch was the start of a 3 year journey that has only recently culminated in the release of the Age of Triumph DLC, and with that release celebrating so much of what made Destiny great, I wanted to go back and review the game as it stands now, so that anyone thinking about jumping into the experience fresh , or ahead of Destiny 2, knows just how much this game has improved since it first entered our lives. Prey is one of those games that you might have heard about, but probably don't know much about more than the name and the fact that it's just been released. Bethesda have been very low key in marketing the game, and also didn't provide review copy to media in advance of the release date. As such, I wanted to give this the proper review treatment. There's so much that goes into understanding what Prey is and what its trying to achieve, so I spend some time providing that background in the first third of this review. Feel free to skip past it to 10:28 if you're only interested in the review itself. I've seen some truly terrible reviews of Prey already. Reviews that write it off as generic and borrowed- nothing could be further from the truth. I hope I've managed to convey the depth and intelligence that springs from almost every part of Prey.

The Surge is a union of Fallout's setting with Dark Souls-like action and exploration, and while the Surge makes some significant advancements in the 'Souls-Like' genre, it misses some crucial beats that seriously undermine the experience. This is a review that I have worked on every day for the past 2 weeks. I've never put more work into a single video than I've put into this one, and that's because I love and care about Destiny so much that I wanted to make sure that when I finally reviewed the game, I was clear on what the sequel was, and where it should go next. This is a video that will disappoint a lot of you, and I'm sorry for that. I wish I could have made something different, and it certainly would have been a lot easier for me to join the chorus of voices praising Destiny 2 as an improvement over Destiny 1. But it's not- it's a step backward, and in this review I want to talk about why.

The Plains of Eidolon arrived some weeks back, and I've spent dozens of hours playing through it. There's a lot in it and it sets a new bar for innovation and imagination. But beneath that, the experimental, rapid fire design philosophy of Digital Extremes has become unsustainable as the player base expands to twice its previous size, and more and more new players join every day. The update is groaning under the weight of the player base, and it's time for DE to evolve their experience, lest they lose these newly arrived players within the first few hours of their arrival.

Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus is a fine video game, but to be honest I'm not really fussed about the 'game' part of it. It's the story, the characters, the politics and the performances that really grips me, and makes this one of the most unmissable experiences of the year.

Call of Duty: WWII | It's cool to hate CoD, but to be honest, it's actually pretty hard to hate this year's CoD. Well, parts of it at least.

Star Wars Battlefront II is a modern day videogames tragedy. I can only imagine how disappointed the people of DICE, Criterion and Motive must feel to have produced a game so strong, and so faithful to the source material, only to have it received in this way because of EA's targeting interventions. This review is for the developers more than anything else. I wanted to pay tribute to the fine work they've done, while cautioning against the potential impact that a game like this would have on the future were it allowed to succeed.

Destiny 2 disappointed me, but I was willing to stick with it because I had faith that Bungie would take the necessary steps to improve the game. But upon seeing how lazy this DLC is, and how unworthy it is of our time, I just felt foolish. I'm out.

2017- What a year. I firmly believe that this was actually the worst year in the history of videogames because for the first time, we took tangible steps backwards.
