Pluto: Disney Animated Shorts

Mickey's a prisoner on jailer Pegleg Pete's rock pile. In a riot, he escapes, but when he's pursued by the jail guards' hounds, he jumps on a pair of motley horses who finally return him to jail the hard way.

Mickey and Minnie go picnicking but make the mistake of bringing Pluto along. The hound chases rabbits and damages Mickey's car; meanwhile, animals ransack the picnic lunch and Mickey sings "In the Shade of the Old Apple Tree."

Mickey and Pluto hunt for moose, the hunt being delayed when Mickey thinks he's shot Pluto and, later, when Mickey's gun falls apart in the foe's face. Pluto says his first and only words he will ever say; "Kiss me!" . It is also the first short where Pluto is called by name.

Mickey and Pluto call on Minnie, but an alley cat disrupts their afternoon of music. Pluto shouts "Mammy!" in the original ending, making this another cartoon in which he spoke - although the cartoon is so often shown cut, most aren't aware of the fact.

Mickey and his gang gather to play "St. Louis Blues" in a concert hall. This short is unusual in one respect. In it, Pluto is given a "human" character; that of playing the trombone in Mickey's band. It was one of the only (maybe the only) short where Pluto was given a more or less anthropomorphic role.

Mickey and Pluto fish in a spot where no fishing's allowed. They enjoy various gags and a chase around the river bottom before the sheriff shows up.

Mickey helps Minnie with her yard work. Eventually a lawnmower runs berserk as Pluto pulls it chaotically around the garden.

A bunch of orphan kids (depicted as kittens) are left on Mickey's doorstep in a basket. They make life into hell as Mickey, Minnie, and Pluto try to give them a Christmas party.

Mickey and Pluto go duck hunting, stopping to jam to "Columbia, Gem of the Ocean." The ducks get their own back, carrying the hunters through the air and dropping them on a clothesline.

Mickey goes shopping for Minnie, but is late bringing the groceries back. She acts haughty as a result, then softens. She and Mickey make dinner in time to the music, but Pluto steals the turkey and causes chaos when they try to retrieve it.

Pluto swallows the soap while being bathed, then runs away. His soapy slobber makes locals think he's gone mad, and they call the dogcatcher to destroy him.

With Horace as his trainer, Mickey competes with Pete at running, vaulting, rowing, and finally a delightfully crazy bicycle race. This short was released to coincide with the opening of the 1932 Los Angeles Olympic Games.

Mickey, Minnie, Horace, and Clarabelle put on another big show, with Goofy as the running gag - eating peanuts and laughing to the annoyance of the audience.

Two inmates at the city dog pound stage an escape and free most of their companions as well. A lively spree ensues, most of which takes place in a nearby junk yard.

Pluto licks a sleeping Mickey, causing him to dream that Minnie's kissing him - and proposing marriage. The imagined union turns to catastrophe as tons of little mice demolish the house. A remake of the 1928 Oswald short, "Poor Papa."

While taking a shipload of musical instruments along the African coast, Mickey and Pluto are captured by cannibals. The savages plan to eat them until Mickey trades the instruments for their freedom, then engages in a wild jam session to "The Darktown Strutters' Ball." This short was made as a spoof of the 1931 MGM film, "Trader Horn."

Mickey's bought a canary to give Minnie as a pet, but doesn't know that the bird has a bunch of hatchlings in her cage, too. When they get away and fly around Minnie's house, an old cat tries to catch them and Mickey destructively tries to keep that from happening.

Mickey entertains guests at a saloon as a piano player, then comforts poor, homeless Minnie. Pete comes to capture her, takes her to his cabin, and a wild Chaplinlike battle ensues. This short was inspired by the silent Charlie Chaplin film "The Gold Rush."

A short short made especially for the 1932 Academy Awards show; it features a small parade of the nominees for best actor and actress. In order they were Wallace Beery for "The Champ" (with Jackie Cooper trailing along behind), Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne for "The Guardsman", Helen Hayes for "The Sins of Madelon Claudet", Fredric March for "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde", and Marie Dressler for "Emma."

Mickey dreams that Pluto has been captured by an evil scientist who hopes to graft his head onto a hen's body. When Mickey tries to save the hound from the villain's castle, he ends up on the operating table himself. British film censors once banned this short, considering it too frightening for younger audiences at the time.

Pluto rescues some kittens, but when Mickey and Minnie seem to treat them well at his own expense, his evil side (shown as a devil dog) convinces him to start a rivalry with the kits. This short was remade in 1941 as "Lend a Paw".

Mickey and the gang attend a premiere of his latest cartoon at Grauman's Chinese Theatre, and lots of Hollywood celebrities of the time are all there to see it. Contains the short within a short - "Galloping Romance." It's more or less an update of the basic Cactus Kid scenario (right down to Horace appearing in an uncharacteristically animal-like role as Mickey's horse), but contains no reused animation.

Mickey and Pluto come to call on Minnie and Fifi, but when Pluto exchanges the chocolates Mickey was going to give as a gift with the bone he has for Fifi, Minnie thinks Mickey did it and a violent argument starts. Mickey and Minnie each vow to give up the opposite sex... but they don't keep those vows for long. An excerpt from this short was used in the Republic Pictures release "Michael O'Halloran."

Pluto pesters Mickey as the mouse tries to do his housecleaning. When the hound swallows a flashlight and later sits on flypaper, you know there's going to be trouble.

While reading a murder mystery late at night, Mickey and Pluto find Elmer, a mouse toddler, on their doorstep. Trying to make the boy feel at home, Mickey and Pluto almost bring the house down around their knees. A segment of this short was used in the Disney feature "The Journey of Natty Gann."

A friend in Australia has sent Mickey the kangaroo Hoppy, who with her pesky son drives Pluto completely to distraction. Mickey wants to train the kangaroos to be fighters, but they end up throwing him in his own hay-baling machine. "C'mon - mix it up!"

The famous mouse battles house-size insects after inhaling too much bug spray.

Pluto chases one cat too many and in his dreams is made to stand on trial before a jury ... composed completely of cats!

Mickey shows off for Minnie, but must rescue Donald when he's nearly blown over a frozen waterfall. Meanwhile, Goofy tries a new form of ice fishing. Edited and released for the home movie market under the name "Donald's Ice Capers"

The Mickey Mousers take on the Movie Stars in a manic polo tournament. This cartoon was inspired by Walt's love of the game of polo. He had organized a team at the studio and arranged games between some of the other Hollywood luminaries. Unfortunately he had to stop when an accident crushed four of his cervical vertebrae, contributing to an arthritic condition that plagued him the rest of his life. The cartoon was delayed in production due to removal of Will Rogers, who had been intended to appear on the movie stars' team but died. Thus the cartoon features early 1935 versions of Goofy and Donald, prior to their metamorphoses.

An opera starring Donald Duck and Clara Cluck? Mickey conducts and Pluto steals the show.

Mickey, Donald, and Pluto climb up into the Alps in search of eagle's eggs and edelweiss - leading to violent conflict with a mother eagle and a mountain goat.

Donald is a plumber dealing with Pluto and an unwieldy leak. The real fun comes when Pluto accidentally swallows one of Donald's tools - a magnet.

Mickey receives a baby elephant as a gift from the Rajah of Gahboon. But Pluto isn't quite sure what to make of it, especially when he begins to suspect that he's being replaced.

Pluto plays mother hen to a handful of chicks who have just hatched in his doghouse.

Chemist Mickey concocts a super strength potion that turns a fly into a fighter and a mouse into a super-mouse.

Mickey and Minnie play the uke and dance for a few brief moments - then it's on to the main body of the short as Goofy surfs, Pluto fights with a crab, and Donald sets himself on fire.

Pluto has to stay and watch the kids while Fifi goes out for food. Not an easy job with five rambunctious pups who won't stay still and end up fighting with an airhose and some spilled paint. Even more difficult when Pluto accidentally drinks moonshine.

A talking parrot wanders through Mickey's house while Mickey and Pluto think they're tracking an escaped criminal.

Mickey enters Pluto in a ritzy dog show where they are hopelessly outclassed and have little chance of winning until the building catches on fire and Pluto saves the day.

Minnie's biscuits are spoiled when she accidentally gets unpopped popcorn into the dough, and the whole batch explodes. ("It always happened to my mother, too," Mickey helpfully comments.) Luckily, Mickey had biscuits from the store with him all along. A commercial short made for the National Biscuit Company and shown at the 1939 New York World's Fair.

Donald and Pluto's swimming trip to the beach is interrupted by a swarm of hungry ants, among other things.

Pluto becomes a hunting dog, learning how to point for Mickey.
