Bet refuses to move out of the Rovers, but Alec insists she doesn't work behind the bar. Betty is shocked to hear Alec has sacked her. Following his solicitor's advice, Alec makes the first move to be nice to Bet, but fears she has had lunch with another man. Although Bet had lunch with Rita, she decides not to correct his mistake, causing Alec to call Betty in as a witness. Alma tells Gail she can cope without her at the café is she wants to give up work, but Gail tells Ivy she's returning to work, that Nicky doesn't want to be tied to her apron strings. Ivy offers her money to stay at home, but Gail refuses, saying she's a mother but she also has her own life to lead. Mavis tires to stall the sale of the house, by giving Mr Goodman, the solicitor, the run around. Finally Derek agrees to pull out of the house buying after he breaks down in the Kabin.
