Sally feels the boys need an "interesting" day out during the school holidays, so she takes them on a visit to the House of Commons.

When an old flame of Sally's turns up unexpectedly, Auntie and the boys are happy to have a man about the house again. But Sally sees any future suitor should have better qualifications than just the ability to mend toys.

Simon sees himself as the potential breadwinner in the house and so announces his intention to leave school. Sally tries to head off his teenage rebellion by offering a military solution.

Mr Campbell invites Sally and her family down to stay in his sister's country home. When Peter falls in the river at the start of their mini holiday and the household has a disturbed night, Miss Campbell starts doubting whether the invitation was a good idea after all.

Auntie starts a "subtle" campaign to enlighten the boys about their mum's impending birthday, in the hope that they might buy her something special.

Sally has joined the ranks of the unemployed and after assessing her qualifications she seriously doubts any employer would want her skills - shorthand that can't be read back, an essay on volcanoes and night classes in fruit bottling.
