AACTA Awards

The awards were presented over three separate events: the AACTA Awards Luncheon, at the Westin Hotel on 15 January 2012 and the AACTA Awards Ceremony, at the Sydney Opera House, in Sydney, New South Wales on 31 January 2012; and on 27 January, the AACTA International Awards at Soho House, West Hollywood, Los Angeles.

The AACTA Awards Luncheon and Ceremony were held at The Star Event Centre in Sydney, New South Wales on 28 and 30 January, respectively.

The Australian feature film category was dominated by Baz Luhrmann’s THE GREAT GATSBY which won each of the six Awards for which it was nominated, including Best Cinematography, Best Production Design, Best Costume Design, Best Editing, Best Sound, Best Original Music Score.

In an unusual though not unprecedented twist, two films were awarded the AACTA Award for Best Film: THE BABADOOK and THE WATER DIVINER, both marking feature film directorial debuts for Jennifer Kent and Russell Crowe, respectively.

MAD MAX: FURY ROAD received eight AACTA Awards across the two events, beginning an impressive Awards run that saw the film receive six Oscars, four BAFTAs and two AACTA International Awards.

HACKSAW RIDGE led the Awards tally, receiving a total of nine Awards, including Best Film, Best Direction (awarded to Mel Gibson), Best Lead Actor (awarded to Andrew Garfield) and Best Supporting Actor (awarded to Hugo Weaving).

The 7th AACTA Awards saw a record 55 Awards presented, with LION leading the Awards tally with a clean sweep, winning all twelve of the categories it was nominated for.

The 2018 AACTA Awards not only honoured screen craft excellence across all industry sectors, but also celebrated the 60th Anniversary of AACTA, Australia’s longest standing national screen culture and industry development organisation.

Jennifer Kent made AACTA history, receiving the AACTA Awards for Best Direction, Best Screenplay and Best Film for THE NIGHTINGALE. As one of the film’s producers, Kent is the first woman to have received Awards across all three categories, for the same film, in a single year.

Leading the 2020 AACTA Awards season with a total of 13 Awards was Stateless, including Best Telefeature or Miniseries, Best Screenplay in Television and all four acting Awards across television drama. In film, Babyteeth received nine Awards including Best Film and Best Direction for Shannon Murphy, marking her impressive directional debut.

The Newsreader led the pack for television with five AACTAs, including acting wins for Anna Torv and William McInnes. Nitram took out all the major categories for film, including Best Director and Best Film and wins for all four of its scene-stealing cast of Caleb Landry Jones, Anthony LaPaglia, Judy Davis and Essie Davis.

The main ceremony occurred on 7 December 2022 at the Hordern Pavilion in Sydney and was broadcast on Network 10 and Fox Arena.
