On the eve of Carnival, Sílvia Alberto meets an artist who wears masks year-round: Fernando Santos, one of the biggest names in drag in Portugal. Born in Mouraria, she learned basic values such as dignity and respect there. At four, she already revealed a fascination with the feminine universe and, even before she turned 18, ran away from home, leaving a note for her mother saying she wanted to fly and be free. A few years later, she considered changing her sex, but realized in time that this wasn't the path for her. Neither did alcohol or drugs. She toured the country performing, savoring the applause, but also experiencing moments of anguish and discrimination. Today, she continues, every night, to take the stage at Finalmente as Deborah Kristal.
