When the skeletons of four young women are found buried in woodland North of Copenhagen, ambitious and headstrong DCI Katrine Ries Jensen and Thomas Schaeffer, a reclusive and cerebral forensic psychiatrist, are drawn into a perilous hunt for a serial killer – a killer who kills according to a pattern, but one which is at first impenetrable.
For both Katrine and Thomas, the challenge becomes one of discerning the human being behind the monster. For only when they come to understand the fantasies and trauma that drive him are they able to confront him.

A family has been found murdered in their home. Nothing has been stolen and the brutal killings yield no apparent motive.
Thomas Schaeffer is disturbed by this mysterious, brutal attack, and takes the case. While the investigation proceeds, another family is kidnapped and held prisoner in their home. The killer sequesters the husband from his wife and child, and in a sadistic game forces the wife and child to role-play his own family.
Katrine Ries Jensen and Thomas embark on a race against time to track down the killer and free the family before the killer’s private Utopia disintegrates.

A 18-year-old inmate is raped and killed in prison. As Katrine Ries Jensen goes up against the system that has made the attack possible, she is forced to confront a past she would rather forget. When yet another prisoner is killed in the same manner, it swiftly becomes clear that this is not just a sex killing. A serial killer is at large in the prison.
The case attracts widespread public attention, and the police come in for heavy criticism. Under intense pressure, Katrine and Thomas Schaeffer struggle to track down the perpetrator in a place where violence and revenge are rife. A place that gets under both their skins, and brings out sides of them they would prefer not to acknowledge.

When the badly beaten body of a man is found, Copenhagen Homicide is soon able to connect the murder to an incipient war between Eastern European drug gangs. Fortunately, the police have managed to insert an undercover officer as driver for the gang leader.
But Thomas Schaeffer suspects that something else is involved

By pure chance, the body of a young female murder victim is discovered, seconds before it disappears forever into the flames of a municipal incinerator.
Katrine Ries Jensen and Thomas Schaeffer are confronted with an apparently perfect murder. The killer is a total psychopath, who plans his killings in minute detail and is not afraid to play cat and mouse with the police.
Meanwhile, Katrine meets a charming man who seems to be the perfect partner for her – were it not for the fact that he is married. As a young psychologist, he held back from sending a patient, who was manically drawing the details of a traffic accident, to a secure hospital. Now these bloody scenes resurface.
