Jean and Servier intend to take advantage of the arrest of Antoine and Suzanne to negotiate with the resistance fighters and the Departmental Committee for the Liberation (C.D.L.) certain guarantees of protection. Marie, separated from the Americans after the attack on their convoy by the Germans, is captured and taken to Villeneuve where reprisals are organized following the attack on the leader of the militia and the German officers.

During this time, De Kervern, the new prefect, tried as best he could to enforce the authority of the Provisional Government among the resistance fighters and the C.D.L. The challenge: drive out the last Germans and take control of Villeneuve.
