No people left a greater practical imprint on the Western civilization then the Romans. While culturally, their greatest contribution was spreading the mainly Greek-made Hellenistic art etcetera, unlike those fickle precursors' ephemeral states, the Roman empire lasted very long, and remained a model for modernity even to date. It was built on superior organization, with specialized, well-trained bureaucracy, and no-nonsense technology, which together with discipline, law and an unprecedented roads system established utter military superiority. The conquered peoples benefited greatly from peace, order and countless practicalities like aqueducts. Rome was the world's envy in many senses, yet life remained harsh for the poor masses even their, despite free distribution of bread (from Egypt) and circus games. Written by KGF Vissers
