During the harvest, Dunno decides to personally bring a watermelon but narrowly escapes being crushed by it. Wanting to make amends, he chooses to bring a cucumber instead and sneaks into the garden at night, where he encounters a beetle that he manages to scare off with his shadow. Soon, however, the beetle realizes he was tricked and attacks Dunno from behind, hitting him on the head before flying away. Trying to figure out who struck him, Dunno looks around and concludes that a piece of the Moon must have broken off. Picking up his hat from the ground, he finds a stone underneath it and decides that it must have fallen from the Moon. He gives the stone to Know-All. The next day, Know-All discovers that when exposed to a magnetic field, the stone produces weightlessness.

Know-It-All decided to build a rocket and fly to the Moon together with the other shorties, after having an argument with the astronomer Glassy about whether life exists on the Moon or not. Before the flight, Dunno secretly stole the weightlessness device to test it on fish — and nearly drowned them in the river. Because of this, Know-All refused to take him along on the lunar expedition.

Dunno decided to sneak aboard the rocket and go on the forbidden journey. He took Donut with him — who hadn’t been allowed on the lunar expedition because he was too heavy and supposedly the rocket wouldn’t lift off with him on board. Inside the rocket, they hid in sacks of seeds and planned to sleep until morning. While Dunno was asleep, Donut tried to get out of the rocket but accidentally launched it, sending both of them off to the Moon.

Upon arrival, Dunno falls into a crater on the lunar surface and ends up in the Moon’s inner core, which is inhabited by little people just like him. On the Moon, plants are proportional to the size of the shorties themselves, and Dunno had no idea about the concept of money. He descends by parachute onto the spire of Klops’s house, where he meets a journalist named Starlet. She says he’ll make a great story, but Dunno refuses, unbuckles his parachute, and falls. He lands in Klops’s garden and eats a pear, for which Klops sets his pet crocodiles on him — on the Moon, crocodiles are kept as domestic animals, like dogs. Dunno manages to escape over the fence, still not understanding what he did wrong.

For refusing to pay for dinner at a restaurant, Dunno is sent to jail, where he tells others about the giant plants and seeds he brought to the Moon. His story catches the attention of a fellow prisoner named Miggy, who gives Dunno a letter and asks him to deliver it to his friend, Julio, an arms dealer, after he is released.

After his release, Dunno meets Starlet again and learns that she has been fired for publishing an article exposing how Mr. Spruts’s factories pollute the air. Together, Dunno and Starlet visit Julio, who uses a bribe to get Miggy out of jail. The three of them decide to found the Joint-Stock Company of Giant Plants and raise money for building a flying machine by selling the company’s shares. Their goal is to retrieve the giant plant seeds from the Moon’s surface.

Miggy and Julio launch a television advertising campaign for their new company. The project quickly attracts the attention of the Moon’s wealthy elite—especially Mr. Spruts—most of whom make their fortunes producing artificial food. Fearing competition from the giant plants, they conspire to prevent the collection of the seeds from the lunar surface.
Spruts bribes Miggy and Julio with half a million fertings and, together with other rich industrialists, raises another three billion to destroy the rocket containing the seeds on the Moon’s surface. Meanwhile, the owner of a tobacco factory, Scuperfield, refuses to contribute to the fund, so Spruts orders his assistant, Krabs, to “deal with” him.

Meanwhile, Donut leaves the rocket and also falls into the Moon’s inner core. There, he discovers that the locals don’t use table salt in their food, so he starts a business mining and selling salt. His enterprise quickly makes him a millionaire, and everyone begins calling him Mr. Donut.
At the same time, Dunno and Starlet try to catch up with Miggy and Julio, who have run off with the company’s money—but their efforts are in vain.

Starlet learns from her editor, Grizzle, that beneath Fool’s Island lies a special system that absorbs the joy of everyone living there. This joy serves as the energy source for Spruts’s factories, while the polluted air from those factories gradually turns the little people into sheep.
After evacuating all the island’s inhabitants — which ultimately causes the island to sink — the shorties from Earth distribute the giant plant seeds to the Moon’s residents and then return home to Earth.
