The first programme tells the back stories of the participants, among them a paratrooper, a submariner, a nurse and a cameraman, and sets out their missions over the hours to come. Peter Snow and former Marine Arthur Williams provide a recap of the day and reveal what happened to each of the seven selected people who were there during the Normandy landings. The programme draws on research by historian Colin Henderson, who has spent 15 years analysing archive material on D-Day to identify individuals, locations and timings, and features expert insights from former British Army officer Colonel Tim Collins and frontline journalist Lorna Ward.
