A documentary about the history of the Ahrar al Sham group, which was established by Salafist rebels to actively fight the Assad regime.
Coming from Islamist families and with battlefield experience honed fighting US forces in Iraq, a diverse group of Islamists find themselves imprisoned in the infamous Sednaya prison. The founders of Ahrar al Sham meet and group up to survive in the fractious ideological environment.
In April 2011, the group gets released as part of a cynical ploy to justify the Assad regime's brutal crackdown on peaceful Arab Spring protests. They arm and declare their independence from FSA, Al Qaeda, and the Muslim Brotherhood.
Faced with the practical realities of governance they moderate their positions and realize to succeed against Assad it must be a jihad of the people, not of the elite.
Soon after their interviews for this program, most leaders are killed in a bomb blast on September 9 2014.
