By May 1948 Pakistan had taken over the Kargil, Dras and Zojlla thus cutting off Leh. The success of Indian Army operations depended on the capture of Zoji la as it was the only land link into Leh. This is when Indian soldiers proved their mettle in the defence of Poonch and the Battle of Zoji la.
