Maria helps Dadá give birth in the midst of a police attack. The gang is suffocated by Silvério Batista's soldiers, who prevent them access to food. As everyone starves, Maria tries to find solutions and have a greater say in the gang's decisions, but faces resistance from the men, even from Lampião himself. Silvério tries to find the gang's location so he can attack them and, along the way, victimizes Lurdes. Finally, Lampião accepts Maria's plan, increasing tensions within the group, especially with Corisco. But Maria's joy is shattered by what she feared most.

Maria makes a promise to one of the women, but the group loses another woman to childbirth. Maria's greatest fear is confirmed and she is removed from the Cangaço. Back at her mother Déa's house, she is reunited with her sister Dondon and meets her niece Amália, who greatly admires her aunt. Five months pass and, while Maria and Dondon disagree, aunt and niece grow closer. Meanwhile, Silvério continues to leave a trail of blood in search of the cangaceiros' whereabouts. Suffering from health problems, Lampião receives news from Corisco, who has come from the city. They talk about the group's future. In the city, Dondon overhears alarming news and warns Maria, who does not think twice and decides to leave her mother's house.

Silvério's offensive goes wrong thanks to the warning of a friend. After a difficult birth, Maria hands her daughter over to her sister. Something seems to have changed in Maria when she holds the girl in her arms and she talks to Lampião about the possibility of new paths. However, Lampião has other plans and hides his poor health from her. Volta Seca gives an interview to a newspaper, where he says things he shouldn't about the cangaceiros. Silvério plans to capture Lampião by following his daughter's trail and tortures one of Maria's relatives. Learning about the child's baptism, the police put their plan into action.

Lampião consults a doctor, who recommends a period of rest. He then moves the gang to spend some time on the farm of Federalina, the widow of his late friend, where mother and daughter now live. Maria is enchanted by their lifestyle, speaking French and playing the piano, and dreams of her family life. Lampião asks Federalina for help to buy land in another state. She promises to help, but has other intentions. Maria and Lampião do not forgive her. Meanwhile, Lurdes and Curió get dangerously close. In order not to offend the honor of the men, Lampião ignores Maria's plea and, outraged, she decides to leave him.

Zé Bispo is tormented by what he did to Lurdes. Maria wants to run away with her daughter, but that is more difficult than she imagines. Maria is reported to Silvério. Lampião decides to go after his wife. Maria is injured and Lampião makes a promise if his wife survives. Benjamin Abrahão, a Lebanese photographer, appears at the group's hideout and promises fame and money in exchange for filming and photographing them. The photos taken are broadcast worldwide through the newspapers, irritating the federal government, which takes action. Maria and Lampião have another problem: everyone in the country knows their faces. The government mobilizes a new troop.

Maria and Lampião go after their daughter in another city, where Dondon kept her safe from Silvério. Dondon heard on the radio that the government sent soldiers after them. Lampião does not want to die like a nobody. Durand introduces himself to Silvério and together they promise to put an end to the Cangaço. Maria and Lampião take the boat that will take them to their daughter, but with their faces plastered all over posters, they are easily recognized. Maria realizes that she will never be able to give her daughter the life she deserves. The couple gathers what remains of the gang to face Silvério and Durand's troops. Side by side, Maria and Lampião open fire on the soldiers and face their destiny head on.
