The World of Dragon Ball Z is a 20-minute OVA special that was produced and distributed by Funimation in 2000, narrated by Christopher Sabat. This OVA reviews the Dragon Ball series, beginning with the Emperor Pilaf Saga and then skipping ahead to the Raditz Saga through the Trunks Saga (which was how far FUNimation had dubbed both Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z at the time).
Over the summer of 2005, Kraft Canada ran a promotion for their Kraft Dinner multi-packs that included a Dragon Ball Z DVD valued at $20. The disc was produced by KaBoom!, who was Funimation’s Canadian distributor at the time. It contained "The World of Dragon Ball Z" compilation special and episodes 124 and 125. This new 60-minute montage was available on this DVD in English but also in French under the name "Le Monde de Dragon Ball Z".

On April 7, 2007, Goku appeared along with Fuji TV announcer Masaharu Miyake as commentators to an anime segment in Nippon Ijin Taishō • Saikyō no Ijin wa Dare? (日本偉人大賞・最強の偉人は誰？; lit. "Japan's Great Awards - Who is the Strongest Hero?"). The segment featured a special World Martial Arts Tournament that was to decide who was the greatest person in Japanese history. The fighters were Musashibo Benkei, Himiko, Prince Shotoku, and Amakusa Shiro. During the intermission, Goku managed to plugged the then soon be released copies of R2 releases of the Dragon Ball DVDs. The winner was Prince Shotoku, who defeated Benkei in the final.

Thirty-nine years earlier, the Oracle Fish () foretold that a mighty opponent would appear before Beerus, the Super Saiyan Deity. Beerus, with Whis, then tracks down the Saiyan warrior Goku, who defeated Freeza. On List of Dragon Ball characters#Kaiō-sama's planet, Goku proceeds to challenge Beerus. Despite having powered up to Super Saiyan 3, Goku is ultimately overwhelmed and defeated in two strikes. Shortly after the defeat of Majin Buu, Bills, the God of Destruction, awakens after a long slumber. After hearing rumors of a Saiyan warrior who defeated Frieza, he tracks down that warrior, Son Goku.
