Maggie and Lucille scrap the shop slate as a New Year's resolution. Annie isn't too bothered about the missing handbag as she enjoyed her night so much. Hilda tries to gossip to her and Emily about the Howards' spilt. Elsie tells Maggie she suspects Alan's with Janet Reid. Hilda tries to push Elsie for gossip and gets an earful in response. No one knows where Alan is staying. Elsie also rips into Ivy and Edna when she thinks they're talking about her but realises she was mistaken. Emily is summoned to Bury to see her ill Auntie May. Nellie and Kitty call at the Rovers to see if Gerald Prince has called and Annie hears that he has her handbag. Jerry tells Alan he sympathises with his situation. Billy gives Alan £112.20, his share of the profits, and tells him that if he can come up with £2,500 the garage it's his, even though the buyer has offered £2,750. Alan asks for 48 hours, even though he doesn't know where he's going to get the funds. Elsie asks Maggie if she's heard anything about the garage and is told about the sale and Alan's redundancy. Ivy can't work through worrying about Jack. Billy returns. Ray refuses to take Stan on at the yard, on the basis that he walked out on them before. Billy likewise refuses Hilda's suggestion that Stan become the Rovers' cellarman. Annie is cold with Billy when she returns from the brewery. Councillor Warburton goes to the roadworks site to find Len. Maggie tells Rita she can stay as long as she has to but not a minute longer. Bates arrives back at the site. Len tells him that he's only interested in Rita's welfare. Harry accuses him of more than that and threatens him. Norma introduces efficiencies in the corner shop which enable her and Maggie to take a lunch break in the Rovers where she meets the rest of the residents. Ena, returned from being with the Lomaxes in Hartlepool, is getting tired of the mess that Dolores leaves behind. Bet has flu so the Rovers is short-handed. Betty is furious to hear that Billy has gone on the advice of Dr. Mitchell. Tommy tricks Dirty Dick into signing a form for Dolores. Annie has four sleeping tablets left. Lucille summons Dr. Mitchell who tells Annie that it's no good moping over her errors. She asks for more sleeping tablets and he writes a prescription. Tommy "announces" Dick's plan to sell Dolores to Weatherfield Slaughterhouse for £30 and shows the letter that Dick has signed as proof. Minnie starts the "Save Dolores Fund" to enable Tommy to buy Dolores off Dick but Maggie, still upset about Alf, refuses to allow a collection box in the corner shop.

He agrees and waits in the car for him. Norma breaks down after she's passed the message on. Patterson interviews Jacko at the shop and insists on searching the premises. Jerry offers to finish off Benny's work as a form of apology but is told that Henderson's have got the job. Elsie tells Len her fears about Alan working with Jimmy. Len doesn't believe her until his van repair is put off for a week because of other work. A depressed Norma comes back from Risley and she takes her anger out on Ray, putting the blame on him. Benny feels life is looking up with the new business venture. He gets Rita to support him in a meeting to discuss terms with Jimmy and Alan. Len tells Ray he can't have the Scarborough job. Ken and Norma question Benny about the break-in again but he doesn't want to get involved and suggests they speak to Ray as he used the flat to chase Sharon Duffy. Jerry tells Ken that £5,000 was taken; way out of Jacko's league. With the borough coming to an end, Mayor Alderman Chapman meets privately with Alderman Rogers at Heaton Park to discuss who will be the final mayor of the Weatherfield County Borough Council. Chapman wants to cast out the parties by electing an independent. Jimmy, Alan and Elsie join Rita and Benny. Jimmy and Benny agree to be equal partners in the new club venture with Alan looking after Jimmy's interests in his absence.

Elsie hopes Alan knows what he's doing getting involved with Jimmy Frazer. Hilda suggests Benny names the club "The Capricorn" and puts herself forward as the cleaner. Alan goes for a business lunch with Jimmy at The Vine and cancels an appointment with Elsie to do so. She follows him there and catches him, Jimmy and two floozies - Deirdre Hunt and her friend Annie drinking there together. Rita decides to take the job of hostess at the club, keeping on the betting shop as well. Deirdre leaves just as Elsie arrives and starts quizzing her. Ken starts looking for Sharon Duffy. Jacko struggles to recount the night of the robbery and remembers that the car was a blue Cortina which had psychedelic transfers on the door panels. Ken gets help from Alan as he sells second-hand cars. Elsie fears Jimmy is treating Alan like a legman.

Edna Gee auditions for a job as hostess but Alan is not in favour. Len asks Rita to drop the idea of being hostess. She wonders why he's changed his mind. The morning paper carries a report of the fight at The Capricorn. Alf, Billy and Annie enjoy reading the reports. Annie is annoyed when the Rovers' new cleaner doesn't turn up. Elsie wants Alan to come home at dinnertime rather than be out with Jimmy Frazer. Norma tells Bet how attracted she is to Ken. Annie, Ken, Ernie and Ena argue over the British attitude to work. Rita looks for Len who left the club quickly when the fight broke out. Hilda's bossiness almost causes Bessie Proctor to walk out. Alf tells Rita that Len is up for Mayor of Weatherfield. The Gazette carries further reports - and a photograph - of the fight. The regulars enjoy reading it. Annie demands that Billy finds her a cleaner - even Hilda will do. Norma offers her cooking and cleaning services to Albert in return for the lessons that Ken is giving her. Len is annoyed that Alf has told Rita about the mayorship.

Billy and Ernie talk about doing something at the Rovers for Christmas. Annie asks Stan to have a word with Hilda about her work but he refuses. Ena tells Ernie he can't get out of organising something for Christmas at the community centre, even if he is already committed to doing the same for the Rovers. Len asks Elsie to be his mayoress if he's made mayor. She suggests he sends Ray to Scarborough so he can make sure of being mayor. Albert dumps a load of ironing on Norma. Ena refuses to allow a disco at the community centre for Christmas and tells Ernie that Albert has lost the centre's decorations. Ken won't tell Albert who he's going out with for the night. Albert refuses to take responsibility for losing the decorations and threatens to resign when Ernie orders him to find them. Stan refuses to take on Alf's windows, telling him he's retiring due to the high levels of tax he pays. Billy, Jerry and Ray are disgusted with Stan's attitude when they realise how many jobs Hilda has on. Elsie agrees to go with Bet and Norma to the club with Ken. Jerry takes Norma to see Jacko on Boxing Day. Emily is convinced Christine Peters knows something about Jason Lomax's disappearance in September but Ernie convinces her there will be a simple explanation for her knowing so much about Jason. Christine gives Minnie a pair of mittens to pass on to Jason. Minnie notices a photograph of Jason in Christine's handbag. Hearing that Minnie received a bottle of scotch from the Howards, Albert gives them socks but Elsie only gives him a box of tissues. Cyril tells Betty that Mrs Regan's benefit is being cut because it is suspected she is co-habiting with a window cleaner - Stan. Betty tells Billy and before long, everybody in the Rovers knows. Alan rows with Elsie for giving Minnie their last bottle of scotch. Minnie tells Emily about Christine coming to see her. Alf informs Stan of the gossip about him. Stan realises with horror that he'll have to tell Hilda before she finds out from someone else.
