The mayor of Montreal, Laurent Saint-Pierre, is at the bedside of his father, Bernard, who was before him a very popular mayor. The latter died and he insisted that Laurent contact his illegitimate son, David, co-owner of the Bar Le Cheval-Serpent, famous for his naked dancers. David is far from sure of wanting to see his father, especially since he is very busy integrating Julien, a gifted dancer, but without experience in this kind of show. Laurent, who publicly commits himself to attacking institutions that "rot" the downtown reputation, is very upset by his father's long-standing affection for David. Dorice, who operates The Snakehorse with David, tries to explain to his spouse, Dominique, why she will not accompany him to Lyon to attend the convocation of their daughter Simone.

Dorice asks Laurent to help David out of trouble, just like his father used to do. How will he react? Simone frustrates Dominique by telling her she doesn't want to pursue a Ph.D., and even more so when she talks to Dorice in the hopes of working at Cheval-Serpent. Julien tries to negotiate with David to avoid having to get completely naked for each performance, while Pete puts his career in jeopardy by accepting advances from a client. Dominique meets with her doctor and shares her concerns with Dorice. The reading of Bernard's will holds surprises for his widow, Margaret, and Laurent.

Dominique informs Dorice of her decision to live alone. However, she agrees to participate with her in a popular radio show and allows Simone to work with her at Cheval-Serpent. The police chief informs Laurent that he will no longer maintain close surveillance on the Cheval-Serpent, now that he understands the underlying motives. However, Margaret refuses to let the matter drop. Mustang, the club's most popular dancer, wants to leave to care for his mother, who suffers from Alzheimer's disease. Can he be convinced to stay?
