Visions of Heaven and Hell

Argues that the western world is in a state of millennial uncertainty. When everything is discredited, we look for answers. Once again technology is offering itself as the panacea. This film talks to the people who are selling us the technology which is supposed to make our future lives work better - the men from Apple computers, Microsoft, Xerox and BT. They tell us computers will give us a new kind of community. We wllok at 2 examples of people who have found personal help through computer technology ; Dave Winder and Phi Catalpho.

Focuses on changes to work and community made by information technology. It asks if the promise of greater freedom and democracy will be realised - or will it just benefit a few? It talks to John Naisbitt, who has built an idyllic lifestyle on the freedom given him by computer technology. And it looks at the other side - at the loneliness of teleworking, and at miners in south wales for whom new technology spells unemployment.

Looks at the way that new technology is dividing the world into the information rich and the information poor. Argues that not everyone will have access to new technology, and those who are excluded will be increasingly alienated. The rich are already using technology not to lift the poor up, but to shut them out - to create hi-tech fortresses. Focuses on the case of Singapore - the most technologically advanced country in the world - yet also one of the most repressive.
