This week I reveal exactly how much it costs to run a chateau! If any of you are dreaming of owning your own French chateau one day, this video is crucial viewing for you!
I break down our monthly costs, so that you can work out exactly whether or not you can afford to make your dream come true.
But I will add one important point! If we’d known exactly how much Lalande would cost us over the years, we probably wouldn’t have bought it. But we muddled through from month to month and now we’ve paid off the mortgage and we’ve been here for 15 years, and I hope we’ll be here for many, many more. Sometimes you need to take a chance in life to follow your dreams. Most of us are capable of far more than we realise
So, if you’re dreaming of owning your own castle one day, don’t let this video put you off, instead, use it to make a killer business plan and prepare soundly for your fairytale

VERY IMPORTANT ADDITION!!!
I recorded this video just before the series was shown on French television, and it has since caused a scandal in France.
The nation has taken against a pair of our competitors, Audrey and Dimitri, for their criticisms of the other bed and breakfasts, most especially the Chateau de Lalande.
Everyone's support has mean a great deal to all of us at Lalande, but I would like to urge people to also be kind to Audrey and Dimitri. We're all entitled to our opinions, especially in matters of taste. Not everyone loves the aesthetic of a traditional, historic home. I think that Audrey and Dimitri would have preferred minimalist, modern, designer surroundings. And whilst we will never see eye to eye on the type of home that we want to create and offer to the world, I don't think they deserve the depth of backlash that they've received. They were always polite during filming, and although they complained about the look of the chateau, I think they were fair in their scoring.
Let's remember that it's only a competition, and life would be boring if we all loved the same things ❤️
I'm finally able to reveal all and talk about taking part in the French bed and breakfast competition, 'Bienvenue Chez Nous'! It was an amazing experience which was shown on French tv last week, and WE WON!!! My mother and I took part together, and visited the other contestants throughout France. Welcoming them (and their criticism!) to Lalande in return was incredibly nerve-wracking, but very rewarding.

This Sunday I take you on a tour of the French Galleries at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York to see their spectacular period French Chateau Rooms. All dating from the 18th century, they're masterpieces of the art of interior design. Filled with furniture made for Louis XV, Louis VI and Queen Marie Antoinette, they represent the pinnacle of French luxury and beauty.
I also uncover the fascinating stories of the patrons who made it possible to save these rooms, which had been ripped out of their crumbling mansions, and to reunite them with the finest furniture of the period.
And today I'm making a very exciting announcement - I've launched our Chateau Diaries Patreon Page!!! So there is now an easy way for any of you to become involved in the restoration of a 16th century French chateau. For 15 years I've been bringing the Chateau de Lalande back to life, far from the public eye, and there's still a lot of work ahead. But the overwhelming response that I've received from all of you since starting this vlog has redoubled my energy. Already, the income from the adverts on these videos is funding the restoration of our Chapel of Saint Joseph!
Together, there's nothing that we can't achieve

This week I finally answer a question that many of you have asked me - why has the Chateau de Lalande's beautiful lake disappeared?
The loss of the lake is something that has upset me very much, and I didn't make this video before because I found it too difficult to talk about it. But, because of the overwhelming support that I receive from all of you, I'm feeling strong enough to face up to the problem and to fight to get the chateau's ancient lake back!
This is a huge step for me, and I want to thank everyone who watches this vlog for your incredible emotional support, and a huge thank you to all of you who have become Patrons of the Chateau de Lalande. I only launched our Patreon page 1 week ago and we already have over 100 patrons! Because of you I'll be able to commission a survey (costing several thousand euros), which is the first step in getting the lake back. YAY! This Sunday I indulge my love of porcelain and delve into the world of Spode! I show you pieces from our collection at the Chateau de Lalande and talk about the fascinating history of this quintessentially British brand.
I’m so happy that, when I first bought Lalande 15 years ago, I went crazy in the Spode factory shop and bought enough plates to serve 30 people when there were only 4 of us living there
I believed that one day the chateau would be filled with people and laughter, and that dream’s come true! (Which, incidentally, means that the chateau is also filled with a lot of broken or cracked plates, but that’s a price I’m happy to pay - and it gives me a great excuse to add to my collection!)

We're all in this horrific global situation together - here's an insight into the ways these uncertain times will affect chateau life.
I filmed this footage yesterday, and since then the situation has continued to change. All non-essential business have been closed in France, and by tomorrow the situation may well have changed again. I've never known things to shift so quickly. All of our decisions will have to be made on a weekly basis, but this is my prognosis so far!

This Sunday we visit one of France's 'Jardins Remarkables', the garden at the ancient Priory of Notre Dame d'Orsan. Reflecting the religious history of the priory which dates from 1107, the garden is full of christian symbolism, but it also follows the monastic tradition of using gardens to feed both the body and the soul. There are extraordinary vegetable gardens, orchards, and an area for the cultivation of medicinal plants - even the walls of the labyrinth are made of edible trees. But all of those practical elements are contained within magical garden rooms, where windows in hedges offer glimpses into other worlds, and which continually surprise and delight...

Sundays at the Chateau are BACK! This week I delve into the glorious world of Toile de Jouy. This iconic French fabric has graced the decoration of the world’s most beautiful homes, from chateaux in France to mansions in America, for centuries. Instantly recognisable, it’s an icon of French design. But today I answer the question secretly asked by many - ‘What is Toile de Jouy?”

To celebrate 'The Chateau Diaries' becoming one of the top 1000 Patreon accounts in the world this week, I look back at the story of our time at the chateau so far. We were here for over a decade before appearing on tv or having a vlog, and its those years that I'd love to share with you today. It hasn't always been easy and I've been digging through old photos to unearth some of Lalande during the worst of the building work. It's been a lot of fun to look back!

This Sunday I'm delighted to reveal a local jewel to you - the Church of Saint Martin in the village of Vic. It contains one of the most important set of romanesque frescoes in France, which are nearly 900 years old! They are a masterpiece of 12th century art, and I feel unbelievably lucky to live so near to such artistic treasures.
The frescoes and the church urgently require restauration. Both the French government and the local authorities have donated money, but there remains a shortfall of €40,000 to save these treasures.
If you would like to donate, please follow this link:
https://www.fondation-patrimoine.org/...
The website is only in French. On the first page you can ignore the options regarding tax - they're just to give French taxpayers an idea of how much they will be able to deduct from their taxes if they donate. You will be asked to give your name and address - if you do so, your name will go onto a plaque showing all of the donors.

This week I share one of the magnificent cultural treasures of this area of France with you - Limoges porcelain! I've chosen to start with Bernardaud, who have been making porcelain in Limoges for five generations. They also own the Ancienne Manufacture Royale de Limoges, which reproduces extraordinary dinner services which were enjoyed by Louis XV, Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. But far from only showcasing their past triumphs, Bernardaud has continued its long tradition of working with great artists, from Marc Chagall to Jeff Koons!
