Scanning the Nile

In northern Egypt, off the coast of Alexandria, the viewer sets off on a journey to discover the incredible stories of two ancient sunken cities at the mouth of the Nile. Underwater and aerial drones will reveal exceptional archaeological sites, whose stories are strictly linked to the astonishing evolution of the river Delta.

In the region of Cairo, there is much evidence of how the floodings of the Nile had a big impact on ancient Egyptian civilisation. Of course they fertilised the Earth, but among other things they also provided water to the canals that were used for the construction of the pyramids. One of these canals has recently been found near Saqqarah, thanks to the use for the first time in Egypt of a LiDar scan.

Built on the shores of the Nile, Luxor is home to the greatest monuments of the New Kingdom: the Karnak complex, the temple of Denderah, and the million-year-old castle of Ramses II. The river has changed its course several times. The viewers are to discover several treasures and wonders engulfed by the waters of the Nile. Some of the latest technologies of archaeology 2.0 will help to explain the daily lives of the ancient Egyptians along the sacred river.

The first cataract of the Nile cuts through Aswan, making it a natural border and a direct gateway to the gold of the Pharaohs. In this episode, the investigation leads the viewer on a dive into the waters of Elephantine Island in order to discover the oldest Nilometer.
