Warsaw, 1878. On Krakowskie Przedmieście there is a haberdashery shop called “J. Mincel and S. Wokulski.” In the absence of its principal — and at the same time his friend — Wokulski, the shop is managed by Mr. Ignacy Rzecki. One day, Wokulski returns from abroad, bringing with him a considerable fortune earned through military supply contracts. He decides to expand the shop and gain entry into the salons of the aristocracy, driven by his love for the beautiful Izabela Łęcka, the daughter of a ruined aristocrat. Yet the haughty countess sees in him nothing more than a tradesman.

“In the evenings, after closing the shop, Rzecki writes down the events he has witnessed. Through the reading of Mr. Ignacy’s memoir, we learn the history of Mincl’s shop and the fate of young — and later adult — Stanisław Wokulski. The old clerk writes about his friend’s exile after the 1863 uprising, his marriage to the widow of the shop’s owner, Jan Mincl, and the beginnings of his mad love for Miss Izabela Łęcka.

“Wokulski’s invitation by the Countess shocks society. The merchant’s entry into aristocratic salons is widely discussed in the higher circles. Only the opening of a new, elegant shop and the establishment of a company for trade with the East contributed to Mr. Stanisław’s acceptance by the aristocracy. Many nobles join the company, encouraged by the promise of high interest on their investments. A frequenter of salons, Wokulski is introduced to President Zasławska, who reveals the secret that years ago she was bound by love with his uncle. For Izabela, however, he remains nothing more than a merchant. Through the mediation of a certain Maruszewicz, Wokulski buys from Baron Krzeszowski a mare that wins the races. Krzeszowski insults Izabela, and Wokulski challenges him to a duel.

In order to please Miss Izabela, Wokulski arranges applause and flowers during the performances of the Italian actor Rossi. Afterwards, through proxy bidders, he purchases the Łęcki tenement house for 90,000 rubles. In this way, he saves Izabela’s dowry. The Łęcki family, who had hoped for 120,000, are deeply disappointed. From abroad, Kazio Starski, Izabela’s distant cousin, arrives in Warsaw. Miss Łęcka considers him a potential candidate for marriage. In Wokulski’s presence, she converses with Starski in English. Offended, Wokulski bids her a cold farewell and departs alone for Paris, though he had planned to travel with the Łęcki family.

Wokulski leaves for Paris. In the meantime, Rzecki, acting as his proxy, visits the Łęcki tenement. He befriends Mrs. Stawska, her mother, and her little daughter, and as a result of his visit lowers their rent. He also meets Baroness Krzeszowska and the students who do not pay rent at all. In Paris, Wokulski revels with Suzyn. In his spare time, he receives crowds of petitioners — as a potential ‘sponsor.’ Two figures catch his interest: Baroness Saint-Germain commissions him to find Mrs. Stawska’s missing husband, and Professor Geist fascinates him with experiments on metals, among which is one lighter than air. But the heart is not a servant — when he receives a letter from the Countess, he returns to Warsaw.

Wokulski, at all costs, wishes to win Izabela’s favor. He even decides to sell the shop. Ignacy Rzecki records in his memoir two events that stirred public opinion, both connected with the sale of the Łęcki tenement to Baroness Krzeszowska. The new owner of the house brought lawsuits against her former tenants — the students and Mrs. Stawska. She accused Mrs. Stawska of stealing a doll. A court hearing was held, during which the baroness was ridiculed.

During Molinari’s violin concert, Miss Izabela falls into ecstasy and then looks favorably upon the violinist’s advances. Offended, Wokulski stops visiting her. Mrs. Wąsowska suggests to him that Izabela’s behavior was revenge for his visits to Mrs. Stawska. Wokulski rushes with apologies and leaves the Łęcki household as Izabela’s fiancé. Mrs. Stawska departs from Warsaw. The Baron returns to his wife and re‑rents the apartment to the same students. The President’s wife dies, leaving 10,000 rubles to Starski. Wokulski, together with Izabela, her father, and Miss Florentyna, sets off for Paris. At the last moment, Mr. Starski joins them. On the train, Wokulski becomes an involuntary witness to the caresses between his fiancée and her cousin. At the next station, he gets off, intending to commit suicide.

Stanisław Wokulski receives news of the death of Mrs. Stawska’s husband. Although he no longer sees Izabela, he still loves her and at the same time despises her. He meets with Mrs. Wąsowska, who tells him about his beloved. Count Łęcki dies, and Mrs. Stawska accepts Mraczewski’s proposal. One day, Wokulski simply disappears. From Zasław comes word that he probably blew himself up in the ruins of the castle. His place in the company is taken by Szlangbaum. Soon afterward, the old clerk, Ignacy Rzecki, also dies. When Dr. Szuman asks who will remain, since the best either die or, like Ochocki, leave — Szlangbaum and Maruszewicz reply: ‘We.’
