Summer 1948: Life in Altena in the Sauerland was tough after the long years of war. But the sisters Ulla, Gundel and Margot are now in an exuberant mood. The youngest, Ulla, turns daredevil Tommy, who has just returned from captivity, his head. She is as good as engaged to the pharmacist's son Jürgen. The shy accountant Gundel meanwhile has the numbers of her father's company, Metallwerke Wolf, in mind. She doesn't notice that Tommy's friend Benno only has eyes for her. The eldest sister Margot takes care of son Winne. Her husband Fritz has not yet returned home after the end of the war. Company boss Eduard Wolf is put under pressure by the weakened workers. The food is scarce. They are on strike, led by Tommy. There is inflation, even a factory owner's money is no longer worth anything.

All machines are to be confiscated. But Jones quickly realizes that Wolf is a decent entrepreneur, not a staunch Nazi. So he leaves Eduard a couple of machines. April 1949. Ulla is finally living her dream: she studies medicine in Tübingen and also works at the university hospital. When she learns of her father's arrest, she returns to Altena. Her mother Christel is certain that Böcker denounced him for having delivered barbed wire to the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. If no evidence to the contrary is presented, it looks bad for Eduard. But the old papers were allegedly burned in an air bomb attack. Ulla has an idea. Years ago, her father helped his friend, the Jewish pharmacist Julius Rosen, to escape. He could testify as a reputation witness. So Ulla asks Jürgen to help her. Because Jürgen's father had taken over the local pharmacy when Rosen had to leave town. In the attic they find photos of him and his children and a postcard from his aunt in an old closet. Jürgen now begins to question how his father got to the pharmacy.

The traces of Julius Rosen lead Ulla to East Berlin. In desperation, she turns to Tommy, who studies here and has meanwhile started an affair with his professor Sybille Himmelreich. In fact, with the help of Sybille, who has excellent connections, they find the Julius Rosen they are looking for. But of course the old feelings between Ulla and Tommy flare up again. With a heavy heart, Ulla gives up her medical studies and decides to put her life in Altena in order first and finally to finish with Tommy, who has gone back to East Berlin. Ulla feels lost after her father's death; Jürgen's solid nature gives her stability. So she finally accepts his marriage proposal. Despite his marriage to Gundel, Benno lives in Düsseldorf during the week, while she stays in Altena to continue working in the company. In Düsseldorf, Benno gets closer to his colleague Regina. When Gundel overcomes her fear of the train one day and visits Benno, she catches him red-handed with Regina. Böcker has been elected as the new employer president.

During the workers' uprising on June 17, 1953, the Stasi targeted Tommy. He fled to Altena with his little daughter Angelika, who arose from the affair with Sybille, and applied to Ulla in the Wolf company. After initial hesitation, Ulla hires him. At the same time, Ulla and Gundel present their business idea of electrically operated hospital beds as an alternative to ammunition production to the other shareholders. When it comes to the vote, Böcker thinks he is the winner with Margot's vote, but she votes for the beds. Böcker rushes off furiously. The Wolf women, however, have been reunited for a long time.
