The episode documents PC Jim Carver's first day at Sun Hill Police Station, where he is partnered with experienced WPC June Ackland. It isn't specified how long Ackland has been at Sun Hill, but it appears to have been substantial even at this point as she is highly respected.
The day is an eventful one; the pair's first assignment together leads them to discovering a decomposing woman's body in her bath. Later whilst on patrol Jim encounters a rude youngster (Gary Hailes) and influenced by comments made by older officers at the station decides to clip him round the ear. This action results in him receiving a reprimand at the station from Sergeant Wilding. Fortunately for Carver, the boy's father approves of his son's treatment, and thus no further action is taken.
June Ackland and Dave Litten have been in an on-again off-again relationship, and whenever they cross paths both tend to go silent making other members of their relief uncomfortable. Sergeant Wilding advises Ackland to drop Litten, saying that she can do better.
PC Reg Hollis is also mentioned in this episode. Whilst not appearing on screen, an attempt is made to contact him by radio. When he fails to answer the call, the officer in CAD makes the assumption that he has wandered out of radio range.

Eddie Santini tries to convince his lover, Jess Orton, to set him up with some drug dealers – he wants out of Sun Hill, and DS Timpney, his friend in Area Drugs, has promised him a place in the squad if Santini can get him evidence on them. However, before he has the chance, the Ortons' club is firebombed, and Santini is shocked when one of the officers assigned by AMIP to investigate the explosion is his old nemesis, DS Rosie Fox. Fox is convinced that Santini is linked to the events in question, but her AMIP DCI, Richard Pallister, believes otherwise. When Santini manages to locate Jess Orton, he persuades her to make a false confession to bombing the club in order to gain the trust of the suspected drug dealers.

Fox is ordered off the case by DCI Pallister and warned that if her actions directly resulted in her death, then she could be facing criminal charges. Vicky plugs DS Timpney for information, suspicious that Santini may not be telling the whole truth. Desperate to conceal his involvement with the Ortons, Santini and Fox find themselves captured by Sherman and Ferguson, and facing possible execution. Fox believes she has a confession for Orton's murder and is attacked by Santini, but after their rescue, it's Santini's girlfriend Hagen who nails him for the murder.

Hollis returns home from work to find a VHS video which has been posted through his letterbox. The video, which was recorded just hours before Taviner's capture, is a personal message from Taviner to Hollis. On the video, Taviner explains that the noise of a police car is one he used to love, but now hates. He also explains that despite all of his misgivings, he did truly set out to be an upstanding member of the community and lay down the law. He also apologises for his part in the Sun Hill fire, and claims that throughout his career as an officer, Hollis was his best friend. The video finishes with Taviner apologizing for all of the times he was horrible to Hollis, and regrets ever leaving him behind.

SOKO chief Hajo Trautzschke pays a visit to his old friend and colleague, retired British Superintendent Jack Meadows.
