At No.14, Ken is also unable to sleep, musing on his past rows with David and regretting them. Emily takes Dave Smith to task for his unfeeling attitude to the news. Hilda asks Val for the £278 airfare but she says the Barlows need to save their money for Ken's own flight. Stan thinks of someone who can lend them the money and goes to see Dave. Dave himself offers Ray six bathroom suites cheap but Ray rejects them. He bought them himself when he worked for Dave and knows they're substandard. Val is shocked when Ken refuses to go and see David buried as he thinks it's a waste of money. Val worries what people will think, especially Stan and Hilda. Len and Annie are annoyed and publicly distance themselves from his comments. Alan and Vine arrive. Ena cancels a night out with Minnie, puzzling her by saying she's expecting a caller. Mr Vine offers the creditors an informal arrangement to avoid bankruptcy and a smaller settlement from the courts, setting Piggott off. Hilda thinks she ought to be at the meeting as Alan owes them 15/3. Vine explains that Alan owes £5,132 and his assets amount to £2,350, if he's given three months. Len proposes a moratorium agreement for three months, seconded by Annie but opposed by Piggott and Lambert. The meeting votes for the proposition.

Albert demands a two shilling win from Stan on the World Cup result and manages to increase it to 32 shillings on several rounds of "Double or quits". Hilda gloats over Elsie's money problems. Sandra asks Lucille to check if there's a room at the Rovers going for her. Annie refuses to let her spare room go. Stan tries "Double or quits" again and his debt to Albert reaches £25, 16 shillings. Stan agrees to try dominoes and his losings reach £1,600. Maggie gets a worrying letter from Les's brother in Birmingham telling her that Les is drinking again. The Howards put on a brave face and go into the Rovers where Piggott annoys them. Stan and Albert try darts. Stan loses again and now owes Albert £3,200 but Annie finds out that they have been gambling on her premises against the licence. Stan declares the debt void. Len finds out that Tommy Deakin has kidded Stan that men are after him for nobbling Duke. They tell Stan that some large and threatening men have been asking after him.
