Ever since Plato wrote about Atlantis around the middle of the 4th century BC, scholars have been arguing: Is the sunken island nation merely an invention of the philosopher with which he wanted to illustrate his political theories? Or did an empire really once exist from which Plato drew inspiration - and if so, where?
