Everyone knows everyone in the small town of Aschberg in northern Germany. The long-time police chief Gerhard Mühlfellner and his new colleague, the newly appointed police officer Anna Wippermann, find the farmer Herbert Schuch hanged in his barn. For them and all other residents of Aschberg it is clear that it is suicide. Only Becky, the farmer's mistress, disagrees. She hires Finn Zehender to get her suspicions confirmed. Zehender, an ex-police officer and now on the road as a private detective, looks slightly idiotic. He investigates with not always entirely legal means and with his razor-sharp mind lays a swamp of corrupt bureaucracy and neighborly evil in Aschberg open and dry.

A new case for Finn Zehender: The private detective has set up his home in the north German village of Aschberg. The two village policemen are no longer his competitors either, but have almost become friends. Village policeman Mühlfellner fatally hits a carrier pigeon in a playful shootout. At their foot is a letter with which a kidnapped man asks for help. Finn and the village police officers Anna Wippermann and Gerd Mühlfellner visit the local small animal breeders' association, where there is a large pigeon aviary. To everyone's surprise, the police in the form of Hamburg Commissioner Christiane Garde are already there.

Private detective Finn Zehender listlessly grapples with the minor case of a betrayed husband. His girlfriend, public prosecutor Agnes Sonntag, gives him a big - and, as it soon turns out, dangerous - assignment: Father Urs Jäger, father of two teenage children, recently needs bodyguards and the protection of the constitution. The reason: He is in possession of a list of Germans who smuggled money past the tax - into secret accounts in Switzerland.

Simone Albrecht hires a shooter in the country to get Christian Buss out of the way. Buss has become annoying to her and her husband Jörg because he has been blackmailing the couple for some time. Simone hires private detective Finn Zehender, who is supposed to shadow Jörg, because she suspects her husband of infidelity. Zehender should photograph everything that Jörg does. Afterwards, the photos should serve to provide Jörg Albrecht with a perfect alibi that he was not the shooter himself. But the Albrechts did not count on the intelligent intelligence of Finn Zehender.
