Back in Liverpool, Robert has bought a new shop, for which James proposes a third company for their partnership - Onedin Chandlers Limited. Of which, as with the other two companies (Onedin Line and Onedin Warehousing), James will hold 85% of the shares.

Albert convinces him to commission a steamship, for which he issues 100,000 pounds worth of shares, into which he puts almost all his capital. But Callon buys a majority of the shares and now effectively 'owns Onedin'. On top of that, Baines, a captain now, loses the Pampero rounding Cape Horn.
