Filmed over a year on location at Dr. Jane Goodall’s chimpanzee sanctuary in the Republic of Congo, this is the moving story of one of the most ambitious and scientifically rigorous wilderness reintroduction programs ever attempted. A group of orphaned chimpanzees is being prepared for reintroduction into the wilderness. It’s a challenging prospect, as the chimps have no experience living in the forest, and no perception of the dangers lurking there.

The release group are assessed on how they react to dangerous snakes, and Dr Cat Hobaiter analyzes Kefan’s unique leadership style. At the main sanctuary, Mbebo jumps the fence of his enclosure and goes walkabout, and 91 parrots arrive at short notice, so the team must rush to find room to house them.

Recent arrival Aymard meets his surrogate mom, and a sick infant chimp, John, is rescued and brought to Tchimpounga by plane. The two meet for the first time and soon become close friends.
