Boy band rivalry appeared as East 17 embarked on their ill-fated mission to give Take That a run for their money and John Wayne Bobbitt came to know the true meaning of loss.

Wonderbra model Eva Herzigova recalls the year male motorists swerved left, right and centre at the sight of her billboard posters, while Oasis and Blur released albums Definitely Maybe and Parklife, setting the scene for future rivalry. The nation's hairdressers found themselves inundated with Jennifer Aniston haircut requests as Friends hit TV screens, faith in the British film industry was restored as Four Weddings and a Funeral became a box-office smash and John Travolta starred in Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction.

Goodness Gracious Me received a warm reception, the campaign to free Coronation Street's Deirdre Rachid began and George Michael found himself in a compromising situation.
