Odessa. Summer 1974. The city is agitated by the news of a series of daring crimes, Odessa residents are spreading rumors that the gang of the elusive Sotnikov, a thief, who has been chasing the entire Odessa UGRO for several years, is again operating in the city. Anya Ksenaki, a 20-year-old law student, spends the summer at a dacha in the suburbs of Odessa and, one day, having arrived from the city at night, she becomes a witness to the police chasing some people. Nikolai Vasiliev, the son of the head of the city criminal investigation department, comes to Odessa on vacation from Moscow, whom his parents sent to Moscow to get rid of his affair with Anya Ksenaki. Anya is going to the city - another suitor, an employee of the prosecutor's office Zvonkov, invited her to the theater. On the way, Anya runs into an old family friend, the jeweler Zaslavsky, to pick up her stepmother's diamond earrings from repairs.

The father, discovering Anya's ring, forces her daughter to confess everything. Realizing that the ring was stolen, Ksenaki hurries to Zaslavsky so that he can help get rid of the ring through his own channels. After the dressing down in the city committee, the head of the UGRO, Vasiliev Sr., ends up in the hospital with an attack.
