In this episode of Assess and Caress, Jay Leno and appraiser Donald Osborne tackle a question central to the collector car world: Hot Rod or Stock? They compare two Porsches that look similar but have vastly different market stories. Both cars were brought to the garage courtesy of the Our Dream Museum in Newport, Rhode Island.
The contenders are a 1959 Porsche 356 1600 Normal and a 1956 Porsche 356 modified by Rod Emory into an "Outlaw".
The Stock Car:
The 1959 356 Normal is a cherished, two-owner car that has been in the same family for over 30 years and represents a period correct time capsule. Donald is quick to point out the car's amazing build quality and iconic pre-war aerodynamic look. Jay, however, admits that as a young man, he couldn't understand why anyone would buy a 60-horsepower Porsche when a Corvette offered 350 horsepower for less money.
The Outlaw:
The Rod Emory "Outlaw" is a completely modified, or "reimagined," version of the 356. Emory Motorsports are restorers
