The Cynical Historian
The Linguistic Turn | Historiography #Shorts 13 (2021x30)
Air date: Jul 21, 2021
Annales and pragmatism were part of many schools of thought that applied a structural understanding of linguistics to history, called the New Social History. Social history looked at society as a whole through rigorous structural theory. The language of primary sources was a kind of ethnic glue that gave context to all speech. Mostly they applied structural functionalism from sociology, as in what was the function of any given subject within the context of its social structure, to linguistic analysis to broaden what societal trends were leading toward a better nation. But structuralism began to break down, as neoliberalism emphasized individuals more than society as a whole.
