The Cynical Historian
Professionalization | Historiography #Shorts 6 (2021x20)
Air date: Jun 24, 2021
As more and more antiquarians wrote history in the 19th-century, universities began to give history degrees. Alongside this professionalization, historians took on standards for their scholarship. The most fundamental figure of this transformation was Leopold von Ranke, who really pushed a reliance on primary sources, good argumentation, and proper citation. Some even pretended this was “scientific” and “objective.” Professional historians were still beholden to the whims of their day. This process played a key role in nationalism by making histories about their nation, extending its existence backward well beyond the limits of common ethnicity. Many historical associations were founded as a nation-building project, and they all relied on a German philosopher’s view of history.
