Everyone knows everyone in the small town of Aschberg in northern Germany. The long-time police chief Gerhard Mühlfellner and his new colleague, the newly appointed police officer Anna Wippermann, find the farmer Herbert Schuch hanged in his barn. For them and all other residents of Aschberg it is clear that it is suicide. Only Becky, the farmer's mistress, disagrees. She hires Finn Zehender to get her suspicions confirmed. Zehender, an ex-police officer and now on the road as a private detective, looks slightly idiotic. He investigates with not always entirely legal means and with his razor-sharp mind lays a swamp of corrupt bureaucracy and neighborly evil in Aschberg open and dry.
