In 1991, November 29 was the Friday following Thanksgiving, and as a result, traffic onI-5 was greater throughout the day. Low visibility on the roadway triggered a series of chain reaction incidents around 2:30 p.m. local time, around 45 miles (72 km) north of Coalinga. The accident claimed the lives of 17 people and injured another 150. Several vehicles caught fire, contributing to the deaths; two bodies were so badly charred that they could not be identified after the accident.
