Psoriasis: interview (SciCast #458) (2021x47)

Air date: Nov 11, 2021

Continuing the theme of psoriasis, in this episode we talk to dermatologist Artur Antônio Duarte and dermatologist Sueli Coelho da Silva Carneiro, who works in rheumatology, to explain why psoriasis is a systemic disease and point out other problems the condition can cause when left untreated. During the conversation, the experts tell us that psoriasis can cause three kinds of pain: pain in the inflamed skin, pain in the joints and pain in the soul, which is caused by the stigma and prejudice surrounding the condition. But why joint pain? Well, around 30% of patients with psoriasis also develop psoriatic arthritis, a manifestation of the disease that can lead to deformation of the limbs and have a major impact on the quality of life and autonomy of individuals.
