How to Pray at a JAPANESE SHRINE on New Year's (初詣) (2018x4)
Air date: Jan 20, 2018
Here's a more in depth look at the proper way to pray at a Shinto shrine 二礼二拍手一礼 (nirei nihakushu ichirei)
1.) Offer coins (5 yen and 10 yen are preferable as they mean "juubun goen ga kimasu youni" which is a pun and means "I pray for enough good fortune"
10 = juu = juubun = enough
5 = go = goen = good fortune
2.) Bow twice
3.) Place your hands together and bring your right hand slightly lower than your left
4.) Clap twice
5.) Pray
6.) Bow once
7.) Take a step back, then face away
I was too awkward to go through all the proper steps as there were many people waiting to pray and I felt bad recording during that time- PLUS not everyone does it perfectly so don't worry! It's what you're thinking and how you're feeling during it that matters.
