During Molinari’s violin concert, Miss Izabela falls into ecstasy and then looks favorably upon the violinist’s advances. Offended, Wokulski stops visiting her. Mrs. Wąsowska suggests to him that Izabela’s behavior was revenge for his visits to Mrs. Stawska. Wokulski rushes with apologies and leaves the Łęcki household as Izabela’s fiancé. Mrs. Stawska departs from Warsaw. The Baron returns to his wife and re‑rents the apartment to the same students. The President’s wife dies, leaving 10,000 rubles to Starski. Wokulski, together with Izabela, her father, and Miss Florentyna, sets off for Paris. At the last moment, Mr. Starski joins them. On the train, Wokulski becomes an involuntary witness to the caresses between his fiancée and her cousin. At the next station, he gets off, intending to commit suicide.
