In order to please Miss Izabela, Wokulski arranges applause and flowers during the performances of the Italian actor Rossi. Afterwards, through proxy bidders, he purchases the Łęcki tenement house for 90,000 rubles. In this way, he saves Izabela’s dowry. The Łęcki family, who had hoped for 120,000, are deeply disappointed. From abroad, Kazio Starski, Izabela’s distant cousin, arrives in Warsaw. Miss Łęcka considers him a potential candidate for marriage. In Wokulski’s presence, she converses with Starski in English. Offended, Wokulski bids her a cold farewell and departs alone for Paris, though he had planned to travel with the Łęcki family.
