“Wokulski’s invitation by the Countess shocks society. The merchant’s entry into aristocratic salons is widely discussed in the higher circles. Only the opening of a new, elegant shop and the establishment of a company for trade with the East contributed to Mr. Stanisław’s acceptance by the aristocracy. Many nobles join the company, encouraged by the promise of high interest on their investments. A frequenter of salons, Wokulski is introduced to President Zasławska, who reveals the secret that years ago she was bound by love with his uncle. For Izabela, however, he remains nothing more than a merchant. Through the mediation of a certain Maruszewicz, Wokulski buys from Baron Krzeszowski a mare that wins the races. Krzeszowski insults Izabela, and Wokulski challenges him to a duel.
